Date: May 5, 1999
The Committee's activities include (1) serving as an advisory body to the University Director of Writing Across the Curriculum and (2) assisting the Director in assuring that the Senate's mandated writing requirement is fulfilled.
During the fall semester there was no WAC Director since its previous Director, Christopher Thaiss, stepped down in spring 99 to assume the position of Chair of English. Professor Thaiss had served for several years as director of both WAC and Composition and funding for these activities had become closely intertwined. The decision to divide these duties between two faculty members brought about complex funding issues that were finally settled in December 98.
Funding issues resolved, Dean Struppa appointed Terry M. Zawacki Director of Writing Across the Curriculum.
Director Zawacki in collaboration with DoIIIT, sponsored a
well-attended ``brown bag'' on Rhetoric of the Web . She also
produced the semesterly
WAC/Writing Center newsletter,
Writing at Center . Another WAC/Writing Center initiative--CAS
390: Peer Tutoring in Writing in the Disciplines-was approved as a
pilot by the CAS faculty and enrolled four students in Spring '99 with
the same number now enrolled for Fall '99. Also, seven of our faculty
will be presenting papers at the National WAC Conference in Ithaca, NY.
Other plans for the Fall include three workshops during DoIIIT's Byte Week , and a Provost sponsored celebration of contributions to WAC by GMU faculty. Additionally, the Provost's Office has budgeted $2,500 for WAC related faculty development activities during the 99-00 academic year.
